High school athletes shine

Across the Roanoke Valley this past week, hundreds of young people showed their mettle and displayed their talents in the classroom, on the athletic field and in the gymnasium.

It was a great year for Valley football with Southeast Halifax, Roanoke Rapids and Weldon all advancing to the second round of the state playoffs. That the dreams ended there does not diminish the accomplishment of these fine young athletes. On the hardwood, the basketball teams — men and women — are tuning up for a big conference season. The Roanoke Rapids women shined winning the Kiwanis Club’s first Tip-Off Tournament.

It is all a reminder of how talented our young people are and how they work hard in the classroom for the privilege of playing sports, playing in the band and participating in a host of other extracurricular activities. They are not alone. In the middle schools and elementary schools, young children show their abilities everyday.

This Thanksgiving, we give thanks for their talents and there abilities and offer our support and encouragement.
