ROANOKE RAPIDS --  After getting off to a sluggish three point first period start the Southeast Halifax Lady Trojans regained their poise to pull out a, 29-26,victory over Warren County in the early game of the three day Kiwanis Women’s Basketball Tip-off  tournament held at Roanoke Rapids High School.

The Lady Trojans had very little time to prepare for the tournament as their court was being refinished. They had even lesser time to warm up for the game when they had only 30 minutes from school letting out at 3 p.m. until tip off 3:30 p.m.

Both teams got off to a very sluggish start when the first three minutes of the opening period went scoreless and only ended with a combined 11 points on the board.

The tide turned a bit in the second period when Southeast put 10 points on the board and the Eagles only managed four but was just a one-point game at half,13-12,with the Lady Trojans having the only lead of the half.

After the break, the three seniors of Southeast Halifax — Seidah Hunter, Kourtney Lowe and Clayreese McDaniel, who returned to the court after a car injury last year, showed poise and on-court leadership to the teammates to lead them to victory. McDaniel scored seven of the first 13 points and totaled nine for the night. Along with keeping the middle true and battling it out with Warren County’s big girl, Rebekah Cox, Lowe managed to put six points of her own on the board.

Hunter dropped a three-pointer and a jumper at the start of the third to account for her points.

“We were kind of sluggish, but I’m proud of their effort,” SE Halifax Head coach Enoch Hood said. “I tell you we needed that, I told them at the half hey we are gonna use this as practice and to go back out there try to relax , smile and just have fun and the result was a win.”

The Trojans will take on NCHS-East at 6:30 p.m. Warren County will play Halifax Academy at 3:30 p.m.
