Will justice be served?

The U.S. government has decided to bring several of the top terrorists being held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to New York for a public trial.

Included in the list of potential defendants is the self-described mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001 attacksand a host of other terrorist incidents — Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

The decision has sparked a heated debate on Capitol Hill, outrage from some families of the 9/11 victims and praise from others who see the decision as a reaffirmation of America’s fairness and belief in justice.

Supporters of the decision note other terrorist trials have been held successfully in New York City and this should be no different.

Opponents question why move the defendants to New York when they could face legal, open trials before military tribunals in Guantanamo. They raise concerns over offering other terrorists new incentives to launch attacks on America and question how much information the U.S. really wants in public. A federal district court hearing could bring to light America’s intelligence gathering resources and methods.
