ROANOKE RAPIDS — Willie Joe Hasty Jr., 76, of Roanoke Rapids, died Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Joe, a native of Roanoke Rapids, was the son of the late Willie Joe Hasty Sr. and Geneva Hasty. Joe was a veteran of the United States Army and was retired as a bank examiner with the FDIC. Joe was a long time member of Rosemary United Methodist Church.

Joe is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sue McElroy Hasty; his son, Dennis Hasty and his wife, Bobbie, of Roanoke Rapids; one sister, Janie H. Small of Roanoke Rapids; one grandson, Josh Hasty and his wife, Brandi, of Greenville; and his niece, Faye Lail of Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Rosemary United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids. The Rev Jim Bell officiated. Interment followed in Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family  received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16, at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, which handled the arrangements.

The flag in front of the funeral home flies at half-staff in honor of Mr. Hasty’s service to his country.
