It isn’t that bad

I understand that Mr. Emery Doughtie is the mayor … But he shouldn’t take too much credit for the landslide … Unfortunately, Mayor Drewery Beale would have lost even if he had run against Elmer Fudd … The city has judged him based on what happened to the theater … I would have loved to have seen the city give Mayor Beale the opportunity to rectify the situation … After all nothing ventured, nothing gained. If he had not at least taken a chance we wouldn’t have the theater we have now … So it isn’t all bad.

No coverage

There was no mention of the Roanoke Rapids Yellow Jackets in the Sunday paper … and they are leading the conference … No coverage? It is ridiculous.

Editor’s note: Yes, it is ridiculous. The situation occurred with an out of town game and a sick sports writer. We apologize for the error. There is no excuse and it will not happen again.

Squeezing out every cent

I received and additional tax bill for a chain-linked fence that came with my home when I bought it in 1984. I phoned the tax office and was told it had been overlooked for 25 years. Are the county and the city tax collectors going to start nickel and diming its citizens?

Picking and choosing?

I know several people who have to move couches and chairs from their front porches … I know several who haven’t been told anything … I wonder, ‘Is the city picking and choosing where they enforce the rules?’

Support the police

I am a concerned citizen and I think the police officers should get more than they are getting … Why can’t you take some of the money you are paying for consultants and use that for the police?

Tax happy in the city?

I think the citizens of Roanoke Rapids should do a study on our tax burden compared to other communities in our area. I think the facts in the city’s last study were misleading. Almost everyone in our area are underpaid, not just city employees. If the city is in such good shape, a tax break should be given to the taxpayers. This would help everybody and would stop the risk of a tax increase by our tax-happy city council.
