RICH SQUARE — Carroll Pope, 86, of Rich Square, departed this life Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

He was born Feb. 26, 1923, to the late Jonas E. Pope II and Virginia Guy Pope in Raleigh. He was a self brick mason.

He leaves to cherish his memory five sons, J.E. Pope, Paul Pope, Michael Pope and C.R. Pope, all of Rich Square, and David Pope of Durham; eight daughters, Joan Gentry of Hampton, Va., Juanita Isaac of High Point, Frieda Barner of Hampton, Kay Lea of Long Beach, Calif., Carole Xulu of Jacksonville, Fla., Debra Dowdy of Woodbridge, Va., Yvonne Newman of Hampton and Bridgette Robinson of Auburn, N.Y.; one sister, Gloria Jenkins of Washington, D.C.; one sister-in-law, Doris Pope of Rich Square; 38 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, at Willow Oak AME Church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, at the church, with the Rev. James P. Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Pope Family Cemetery.

Hunter’s Funeral Home in Ahoskie is handling the arrangements.
