CROWELLS CROSSROADS - The Weldon Chargers invaded Crowells Crossroads Friday night with only a hiccup lost to powerful, Harrell’s Christian Academy standing between them and an undefeated season record. On the other side of the ball, Southeast Halifax’s (2 - 8, 2 – 3 TRC) record reflected a team whose initial head coach resigned winless by mid-season.

On paper, Southeast didn’t have a chance, but nobody told the Trojans.  While Weldon (8 – 1, 5 – 0 TRC) won the game by a score of 22 – 8, the contest was much closer than the score indicated.

Weldon’s head coach, Grady Williams realized Southeast was a dangerous opponent. “They’re 2 and 2 in the conference and with a win tonight they’ll be 3 and 2,” he said, reflecting before the game. “Plus it’s their senior night and homecoming, so we’re in for a fight,” he correctly predicted.

The Trojans bottled up Weldon’s super back, Joseph McGee the entire evening. Their gang tackling tactics limited the senior to short gains and held him to a total of 58 yards on 10 carries.

Coach Williams seemed disappointed in his team’s play, “We came in here pretty much thinking we had a win already,” he said. He explained, “I don’t think we came in to secure an opportunity to play for a championship.  I think we came in assuming that our record was going to win this one for us and Southeast came to play”
