Message for the pulpit

For the preacher who is against helping needy families and little children, she needs to go back and pray and ask God to show her is that love, is that Christ-like … Helping innocent children will not make you lose anything …

Old plant

While code enforcement is doing a clean sweep of the town, I wonder if they will do anything about the old chemical plant on 11th Street which is falling into the ground?

Vote Tuesday

Remember your vote does count this Nov. 3.

More patrols

Could the state troopers please patrol Roper Springs Road in Littleton more often?

Now is the time

Health care reform really needs to be done …

People need help

Do people realize that every day in Roanoke Rapids there are 25 to 50 claims filed for disability benefits by people who are capable of working but because of amental health problems they can sit home and receive a $600 check each month? Do they not realize a job would pay more? Young men and women who are diagnosed with depression are eligible for disability. Often I am depressed but I hold down a full-time job. How can our tax dollars pay out disability to a drug addict? Why can’t they flip burgers during the day then smoke or drink after work? There are handicapped people who hold down jobs. I understand that some citizens fall into a class that qualify to receive this kind of help and they deserve it. I also know that elderly people who have worked all their lives have to fight to get benefits if they become disabled, but these druggies or just plain lazy people can go to a psychiatrist and be put on medicines then the next day file for disability. OK people, where is the money going to come from when us who are middle age reach retirement age and after working hard all our lives want our Social Security benefits? It will be all gone. It will be used up by people abusing our system.  Why can’t the government make people who can work, go out and get a job and work? How can lawyers file a claim for disability for a drug addict? Please citizens of Roanoke Rapids read up on this, write your congressman and maybe somewhere down the road a difference can be made.

" I agree with "people need help." Why is it that I work a full time job and hardly get by, and people around here sit at home and draw a check and drive around with their nice new cars with rims and big systems in their cars. If the goverment would DRUG TEST everyone who gets any type of help,it would weed out over half of the people. Its crazy how people see a way to get what they want and not work for it. What are we teaching our children?? Laziness?? We need to teach them that everthing isn't handed to them, to work for what you want. If you need the help then please get it but dont abuse the system because your to lazy to work!! "

" I so agree with this!! (disability benefits) You have no idea how crooked it looks and sometimes is to see someone perfectly capable of working receive SSI or SS or even WELFARE for having panic attacks when there is a child with seizures, asthma, heart problems, learning disabilities, bipolar and ODD who gets turned down, YES>>TURNED DOWN for SSI!!! Where do we turn? No one is gonna help us. This child takes 10 pills a day plus 2 breathing meds. I have dealt with depression all of my adult life but I still get out and work for a living. Im a single parent and have no choice. But some can get over on the system and say they cant work when in all actuality, THEY CAN and DO...from their home, under the table, and make more money than I do!! System fails our children and those in REAL need way too much! "

" This is for the ignorant person in Oct. 30th sound off. Depressed people have a hard enough time dealing with ignorant people like you while dealing with a disease that can be life threating. You say you have been depressed but you still go to work every day. Believe me if you ever had a severe episode of depression you would not go to work. If you had to deal with the medicines you have to take you wouldn't go to work either. I have struggled with chronic depression for over 20 years. You wake up crying and go to bed crying. It can destroy families and relationships. By the grace of God I have found the correct medications and I go to work every day. Before I have lost jobs because I couldn't concentrate and the medicines made me so groggy. I have never been on disability and I bet my work ethic is stronger than yours. It's all in your head people say, pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Would you tell someone with a brain tumor it's all in their head? Depression can be a fatal disease if not treated, usually self inflicted. People need to educate themselves about diseases like this. I do not believe drug addicts and alcoholics should be given disability either, these are self inflicted. My depression was not brought on by anything I did. One day I was successful healthy and happy and the next I thought I was losing my mind. I have to worry constantly about a relapse and there not being a room at a hospital for me because drug addicts and alcoholics are taking up the rooms. There are also these people in assisted living taking up the rooms that are meant for the elderly and handicapped. I pray most people never have to go through severe depression because you don't know what these people go through. I also believe a lot of alcoholics and drug addicts are self medicating an underlying condition. People please educate yourselves and let people suffering from depression not have to hide it because of the shame and misunderstanding inflicted on them by ignorant people. "
