Mary Lee Riggan Ray

HENRY, Va. — Mary Lee Riggan Ray, 79, of Henry, Va., died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

She was born Nov. 12, 1929, in Roanoke Rapids, to the late Irvin Riggan and Bessie Batton Riggan. Mrs. Ray served with her husband, Minister R.D. Ray for 43 years at Fort Trial Christian Church. She also worked for the Martinsville Police Department for more than 30 years as a records clerk.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, R.D. Ray; her brother, Irvin Riggan Jr.; and son-in-law, John Daffron.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Ray Daffron of Salem, Va., and Kathy R. Hart and her husband, Danny, of Henry; a son, R. Douglas Ray Jr. and his wife, Wendy, of Powell’s Point; a sister, Marie Grant of Garysburg; and 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family received friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 24, at Fort Trial Christian Church.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 25, at Fort Trial Christian Church. Minister Lawrence Harris and Dr. Jim Dickerson officiated. Burial followed at Pleasant Grove Christian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fort Trial Christian Church, 6368 Virginia Ave., Bassett VA 24055.

Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett handled the arrangements.
