NC elections board to rule on Easley, state Dems

RALEIGH (AP) — The North Carolina State Board of Elections is set to consider allegations against former North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley’s campaign committee.

The board plans to begin deliberations Friday morning after four days of testimony in Raleigh. The board could issue fines, refer the case to prosecutors for criminal charges or exonerate one or both groups.

At issue are campaign flights for Easley, piloted by a political ally, McQueen Campbell.

Campbell testified the former governor told him to file flight invoices to get reimbursed for repairs to Easley’s home. Easley said he never told him to do that.

The board also is examining whether the state Democratic Party allowed Easley’s campaign to decide how to spend party money.
