Dr. Elizabeth B. Cofield

RALEIGH — Dr. Elizabeth B. Cofield, 89, of Raleigh, peacefully departed this life Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston.

She was a daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. John H. Bias. Dr. Cofield received her education from Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, Hampton University, Hampton, Va., Columbia University, New York City, and N.C. State University, Raleigh, and served as professor of education and personnel administrator for more than 40 years at Shaw University in Raleigh.

She was the first African-American elected to the Raleigh Board of Education and Wake County Board of Commissioners.

Dr. Cofield was the widow of the late James E. Cofield Sr.

She is survived by two sons, James E. Cofield Jr. and Juan M. Cofield (Julia); three grandchildren: Nicole, Elissa and Alexis; and her sister, Lillian B. Abron.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29, at Haywood Funeral Home, 2415 S. Wilmington St., Raleigh.

A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30, followed by funeral services at 1 p.m., in the Boyd Chapel on the campus of Shaw University in Raleigh. Entombment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens in Raleigh.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Elizabeth B. Cofield Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 320128, West Roxbury MA 02132.

Cofield Mortuary in Weldon and Haywood Funeral Home in Raleigh is handling the arrangements.
