ROANOKE RAPIDS---The sixteen points which Chaloner Middle School football team scored in the  first quarter stood to be good enough for the 16-12 victory over the Weldon Chargers Monday night in a make up game on Hoyle Field.

If the first quarter was any indication of what was to come in the game , the fans and parents who braved the rain and cold night air would be in for a treat

A combined total of 28 points in the quarter, with three touchdowns were scored in succession. The Chargers got on the board first with a 50-yard touchdown run by Elgin Jones. Weldon failed on the two-point conversion.

The Jackets answered with an 80-yard return on the kick off  for a touchdown run by  Scotty Shelton for six. Chaloner took the lead, 8-6, by scoring on the conversion.

Weldon however, fired right back with a 55-yard touch run by William Jones on their first play after getting good field position on the kickoff. Once again the Chargers were not able to convert the two-point attempt but went out front, 12-8. The next touchdown for the Jackets didn’t come as easy as the first, yet still came as they marched down field gaining yardage on every carry setting up for a 10-yard jaunt into the endzone by Shelton. The Jackets scored on the two point conversion to take the lead, 16-12.

However, the scoring frenzy in the opening period would be the only scores of the night as the three remaining periods went scoreless as each squad turned the ball over on downs, with neither team able to duplicate their success.
