Gambling

not involved

In reference to the Sound Off! regarding the car and Victory  Baptist Church and the comment it was gambling. The church was not conducting a raffle. Several of its members called and explained, “We did not raffle any car away. There was no form of gambling. We  oppose gambling. The car was donated to us and we gave it away free to someone attending our teen event. The teens were invited to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and have a change in their life.” Several hundred teens attended the free event over three days at Kirkwood Adams Civic Center. Their attendance earned them a chance at the car drawing.

Get the right shoe

There is a historic schedule for the life cycle of a democracy. Our country is in the later stages of that cycle. When it starts people are self sufficient and support nearly all of their needs. Then a community and financial economy is formed. During the 1800s we had forms of slavery both North and South. In the South they were predominantly black and in the North predominantly white. In the South for their labor in the fields slaves were provided clothing, food and housing. In the North they worked in sweat factories but could never get ahead financially and so were in financial slavery. The main difference was that some of the Northerners could leave and try something else to better themselves. Not quite so much in the South. Today we have a variant of slavery reasserting itself. By denying a reasonable chance at education certain groups were kept from advancing. This brought about the need for a welfare system to support these people. This program advanced until a portion of our population, of all colors, became totally dependent on the government for their daily well being. I look at this as newer form of slavery with the prime difference being that nothing is expected in return. Health care reform is another step in that control cycle.

Lincoln and Jefferson said that when the government takes over doing for people what they should do for themselves, then it was doomed. If the shoe fits please get another and take control of your life, or lose your country,

Times misses the boat

Just read an editorial in The New York Times. It seems a member of Congress wants to add a single question to the census. "Are you a citizen of the US- Yes or No". They have come forward a little late in the program but it seems a logical question. Why was it not there in the beginning? The Times is dead against it. It would cost millions to redo hundreds of millions of forms. Say what? We have roughly 300 million population. When a form is filled out it does a full family. This is the type of exaggeration the Times uses all the time. The Times thinks this would be discriminatory to non citizens and would cause minorities to not participate. Say what? Why would they not? The other member wants citizens who are overseas counted. Presently only military and federal workers are counted. Why not people who are overseas on business or in school? The Times says that since it may be put forth by Orrin Hatch of Utah and would include overseas missionaries of the Mormon Church it might add enough to the Utah count to get another seat in Congress. I always thought the Census was to count the people living here legally. What the Times is asking us to do is to count the ones who may not belong here and exclude those who should be counted. You must remember that federal distribution is based on population distribution. Those who do not belong here should not be counted.

Quick draw

I just changed satellite companies. When I called to cancel my old one they told me it might take several months to halt the charges to my credit card. I found it interesting that when I signed up I was charged for the initial month that same day. How come when you are the one paying they charge you immediately but when they are the ones "paying" they take forever even when you are no longer getting their service?

Trashy picture

I have been given 14 days to clean up some trash in my yard. I have been after the city to clean up Emry Park for more than 70 days. Can anyone tell me what’s wrong with this picture?

Praise for police

It was great news to read that an arrest had been made in the Shelby Salmon murder case ... It was a great news to me and the whole community ... I want to thank the Roanoke Rapids Police Department, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation for their many, many hours of hard work to bring about an arrest.

Buildings

Why is it Halifax County builds buildings to create jobs, but Northampton County just builds buildings?

Great job

I would like to applaud the Roanoke Rapids Police Department for patrolling our neighborhood in the Hell’s Ranch Division. Thank you so much.
