Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Jeff Hinton said the dog, a German shepherd mixed breed, apparently got loose and attacked the woman, Angela Allen, 68, of 10th Street, biting her on the arms, legs and lips.

Larry Jordan, who was also in the park exercising when the attack occurred around 7:20 a.m., chased the dog off with a stick.

The dog was later captured and taken to the Halifax County Animal Shelter.

The dog’s owner, Deborah McDaniel, was cited for allowing a dog to run loose and keeping a vicious animal, which is punishable by a $650 fine.

Also reported by Hinton, a person was accosted in Emry Park and three people were charged with common law robbery.

Hinton had no details on the victim but said the robbery occurred around 6 p.m. yesterday.

David Benjamin Crowder, 23, of Vance Street, Justin Roger Nowell, 25, of Washington Street, and Joseph Wayne Smith, 21, of Franklin Street, were each charged and jailed on $15,000 bonds. They have July 29 court dates.

" Jeff Hinton continues to do an excellent job as RR Police Chief along with his officers. Now it's up to the court to give appropriate sentencing. "
