HALIFAX — A man who sped away from a deputy yesterday, allegedly did so with his 5-year-old son in tow, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy James Matthews was in Hollister yesterday getting a report on Trent Richardson about some threats he allegedly made against neighbors, Lt. Bobby Martin said.

Once Matthews finished taking the complaint he left the Tuscan Road area of Hollister and saw Richardson at a stop sign.

When Richardson saw the deputy, he sped away and turned on a dirt road where he spun the vehicle out.

When Matthews caught up with Richardson, he saw the man running one way and his son running another way.

Matthews caught Richardson at the tree line, arrested and charged him with flee to elude arrest and misdemeanor child abuse.

The child was taken into custody of family members.
