Tap-on fees reduced, water bills go up

JACKSON — Director of Public Works Billy Martin approached Northampton County Commissioners at their June meeting concerning fee changes for tap-on and water rates.

Martin recommended $10 tap-on fees and $30 deposits while Phase V Water Expansion is in progress. Martin said it’s important to have as many customers “tap-on” as possible during this phase and he believes these price reductions can help.

On the other hand, increases from Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District and the Town of Weldon for water and sewer rates are making it necessary to raise rates in Northampton County across the board. “This one pains me,” said Martin.

The Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District increased their rates by 7 percent for water purchased and sewer treatment per 1,000 galloons. Weldon increased their rates by 6 percent. “This is to offset the increases in the cost to purchase water,” said Martin.

 Residential and commercial customers will see a $1 increase on their bills. “That Increase equates to 5.2 percent,” said Martin. Those changes will go into effect July 1.
